An empath is a person with the ability to apprehend the emotional state of others. They are natural helpers and fixers. If empathy can be channeled in the correct ways it can be very powerful. You can improve yourself and the world around you. On the other hand empathy can also be a big stresser in someone's life. Empaths can often hide from friends and their own skills because they feel anxious or drained. For example someone with high empathy may choose not to go to parties or concerts because it can be very overwhelming.
The first step to channeling your empathy is to acknowledge you have it! Some traits found in empaths are:
Being highly sensitive:
Huge hearts
Intuitive
Introverted
Nourished by nature
Spiritually open
Connected to animals
If you experience these, you may be an empath!
Have you ever gotten the feeling that someone in your life is going to be bad for you? Well that's your intuition speaking…trust it! Empaths are so good at sensing things that it's almost like they can predict the situation. A good way to start practicing using your intuition is with small things. For example, guessing the color of a car passing by before you see it! Intuition is so key to channeling this energy in a good way!
Next, set boundaries!!!!!
As empaths we usually want to help everyone we know and take other people's responsibilities on our shoulders. That's why it is so important to set boundaries. Your biggest priority should be you! You can take care of yourself while helping the people you love. Just make sure you aren't taking too much on.
Another great tool for channeling this energy is meditation. It's important to take time to ground yourself and truly listen in on your mind and body. Empaths need time to recharge! Next time you are feeling sensory overload, sit in a quiet room and just check in on yourself. Give yourself permission to relax and enjoy the experience.
Empaths usually have a need for the feeling of calm. A good way to calm yourself down is practicing breathing exercises. Use this to your advantage! You can use your breath anywhere at any time. If you start to feel panicked, take a second and tune into your breath. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and exhale for 4 seconds. An easy way to ease your nerves.
This last step is definitely the most challenging and takes time to truly feel but it is so helpful for empaths. Learn to love YOURSELF! You take care of and give all your love to the people around you but it's time to do the same things to yourself. Loving yourself as an empath is so incredibly powerful. If you are truly at peace with yourself you will be at your full potential! It takes time and patience but you can get there!!
