Recovery is TOUGH. In fact, it is one of the hardest things that you will ever have to do.
While there are many avenues of recovery there seems to be one common factor for achieving long term success: community.
While social media has contributed to the rise of diet culture and disordered eating, it has also made finding a recovery community easier than ever before.
If you're questioning wether or not you are ready to start a journey to recovery here are a few things you should know:
You don't have to be diagnosed with an eating disorder to identify with having a poor relationship to food and your body. The average woman struggles with body image so why aren't we coming together to talk about these issues more?
There is no perfect time to start. Seriously. If you've been waiting for a sign to get started THIS IS IS IT!
No matter how amazing your treatment team is or how supportive your friends and family are, no-one will ever "get it" as much as those who have those shared lived experiences. Joining a recovery community instantly gives you a squad who just "GET'S IT."
This is why Leah created Empowered RX which helps women who are re-evaluating their relationships with food and fitness to find freedom and healing. Diet Culture is only going to change if we come together and change the status quo. There is a power in women gathering for a common cause.
Meet friends who will partake in activities that aren't destructive or counterproductive to your recovery. Many of our social outings have nothing to do with recovery. We enjoy each-others time and soak up experiences that a life free from disordered eating allows.
Research shows that helping others makes us feel better about our own journey. The peer:peer support model in a recovery community motivate you to be a role model and to show up as the best version of yourself.
Community creates a safe space for you to grieve in recovery. Grief is often not talked about. Grieving our losses and our experiences is important, and being mirrored and understood is even more so.
Community leads to co-regulation and co-regulation leads to healing.
